Prayer

Week 04: Prayer of Examen
The Prayer of Examen was created by Ignatius of Loyola as a way to prayerfully examine one’s life. It can be easy to become overwhelmed by all of the things we want to change and improve in our lives. Rather than trying to fix everything all at once, the Prayer of Examen invites us to take inventory of our lives. In this prayer, we invite God to show us where we are broken and need healing, where we are distracted and need vision, where God has blessed us so we can express gratitude, and where God is present so we can become aware of his presence with us.

This is a practice that is focused on reflection and examination. It may be helpful to use a journal or note in your phone to write down what comes to mind as you go through this practice. This will also help you track progress, see trends, and see God working in your life over time. Also, many people find it helpful to do the Prayer of Examen at the end of the day, but it can be done at any time.

Before you start: Become aware of God’s presence. Jesus promised to be forever present with you. He said, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt. 28:20b). Invite God to be present with you and to guide you through this time of prayer.

  • Spend 3 minutes in silence & solitude. Become aware of God’s presence with you.

  • Pray:Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23-24

01 – Examine your day with gratitude.
Where was God’s goodness, blessing, and joy in my day? What were the moments of goodness and joy I experienced today? Where am I grateful?

02 – Examine your heart.
What emotions did I feel today? Where did I fall short or give into sin today? What is one area of my life God is calling me to focus on?

03 – Talk to God about it.
Thank God for the good things. Bring him your emotions, temptations, and failures. Tell God how you’re doing and ask for help to live differently tomorrow.

”God, tomorrow is a new day — a fresh start. You will meet me there too. Thank you for today. Help me to see each day as a gift and opportunity to grow in our friendship. Fill me again with your presence and help me to live tomorrow for you.”

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” — The Serenity Prayer
