Prayer 05: Contemplative Prayer | Discussion Guide

Debrief Last Week’s Practice (10 mins):

  1. How did last week's practice go?

  2. What was the most encouraging part of last week’s practice for you? What was challenging for you?

  3. What do you think God is wanting to do or show you through these prayer practices?

Discussion (15 mins):

  1. Read this week’s practice together. What stands out to you?

  2. Does anyone have a first date story to share?

  3. Some times we can view prayer or even God himself as a means to an end. Why do you think it’s so easy to approach prayer and even God like this?

  4. Being with God sounds great, but it isn’t always easy. What are some potential challenges to contemplative prayer? How can you both be gracious with yourself and find was to overcome these challenges?

Do the practice together (30 mins):

Gather together in a comfortable space like the living room. You could play some light music to eliminate distraction. Have someone pray and welcome the Holy Spirit as you begin.

  1. Show up. Be still before God. Quiet your body and surroundings. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes if that helps.

  2. Look up. Realize that God is here and that he is love. Become aware of God’s presence with you. Bring God before your mind. Allow God to show you who he is and what he is like. If your mind wanders, use a short phrase like “Abba, Father, you love me” or “Holy Spirit, you are here” to center your mind back on God.

  3. Shut up. You don’t need to say anything or do anything. Just be with God. You don’t need to feel anything or have a certain experience. Just be alone with God in silence. Contemplative prayer is less about doing and more about being. It is about love that is beyond words.
