Spiritual Gifts 01: Making love the aim | Discussion Guide

Discussion (45 mins):

  1. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of spiritual gifts? Do you think of Harry Potter-like super powers? Do you think of televangelists? Or do you think of something else?

  2. Read the introduction to the spiritual gifts practice together. What stands out to you?

  3. Do you think about spiritual practices and spiritual gifts going together? Why or why not?

  4. Have you ever thought about the difference between operating in a spiritual gift and possessing a spiritual gift? What do you think is the difference between the two?

  5. Read this week’s practice together. What stands out to you?

  6. In what ways can we miss the point of spiritual gifts?

  7. The goal of spiritual gifts is love. If that’s true, how do you think we can use gifts in a loving way?

  8. Read Luke 11:9-13 together. Why do you think Jesus says that the Father will “give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him”?

Do the practice together (30 mins):

  1. Aim at love. Spend some time praying as a group for each other. Put one person in the middle of the prayer circle and ask God to pour out his love in their heart through the Holy Spirit (Rom. 5:5). You can also pray that they would love and persue God more than any other thing. Make sure everyone is prayed for, one at a time.

  2. Seek his face. The author of Hebrews says that he rewards those who earnestly seek him (Heb. 11:6). Go around in a circle, one at a time, and ask God to fill the person next to you with the Holy Spirit.

  3. Knock until it's open. Jesus taught us to ask until we receive, seek until we find, and knock until the door is opened (Lk. 11:9). Spend some time praying for each other. Ask God to give you spiritual gifts and to reveal to you what gifts you may already have.

Debrief (15 mins):

Come back together and debrief how it went in your group.

  1. As we prayed for each other did any one sense anything?

  2. What was it like to pray for others?

  3. What was it like when others were praying for you?
