Generosity 03: Sharing your possessions | Discussion Guide
Debrief Last Week’s Practice (15 mins):
How did last week's practice go? Did you try to share to share the gospel with anyone? How did it go?
Did you learn anything new? Was it easy or difficult? Is this an area where it's easy to follow Jesus or more challenging for you?
How can you keep this practice going?
Discussion (30 mins):
Many people think they don’t have enough to be generous. To find out, use this wealth calculator to find out where you sit on the global wealth scale.
Read this week’s practice together. What stands out to you?
Most people in the West believe their possessions belong to them. They think that because they’ve worked hard for the things they have they can use their possessions how they please. These are their “rights”, they think. But are they really? That might be true in the kingdom of America or Canada, but not in the kingdom of Jesus. Tim Keller addresses this and says, “If you had been born on a mountaintop in Tibet in the thirteenth century, instead of a Western country in the twentieth century, then no matter how hard you worked, you wouldn't have had much to show for it. If you have money, power, and status today, it is due to the century and place in which you were born, to your talents and capacities and health, none of which you earned. In short, all your resources are in the end the gift of God.” How does this change our attitude toward generosity?
Read James 2:15-17 together. How do you know if your faith is real?
What are the things in your life that God might be asking you to be generous with?
Who are the people God might be asking you to be generous to?
Prayer (15 mins):
Spend some time praying together. Pray that God would empower you to share your possession this week. Pray that God would provide for those in need. Pray that God’s people would be moved to action.
